The Micromanagement Trap Hurting Your Dental Practice | Nishant Pandit | FF

One minute.

That's all it took.

A practice owner realized he was tracking employees down to being one minute late from lunch.

The practice was growing. The systems looked strong from the outside.

But underneath, trust was quietly disappearing.

That moment became a turning point.

Here's what I learned:

1. Control and leadership aren't the same thing.
Micromanagement often feels responsible because it creates visibility. But seeing everything isn't the same as developing people. The more every decision flows through one person, the less ownership everyone else feels.

2. Accountability grows where trust exists.
When the focus shifted from monitoring minutes to measuring outcomes, something unexpected happened: people became more responsible, not less. They started managing themselves because they felt trusted, not watched.

3. Every leader eventually chooses what they're optimizing for.
It's possible to build a culture where people follow rules because they're afraid. It's also possible to build one where they take ownership because they're invested. The second takes more patience, but it scales much further.

One line from the conversation stood out:

"If someone is giving you 90 out of 100, micromanaging won't get you the other 10. It might cost you the 30 they were willing to give."

Sometimes the biggest improvements don't come from adding another system.

They come from removing unnecessary control.

The full Fail Forward episode shares how this practice owner recognized the problem, changed his leadership style, and what happened after he let go of micromanagement.
