My name’s Jerry Jones.  I’m in Salem, Oregon.  That’s where I live, where my dental office is located.  I’m kind of a weird guy.  I have a dental office.  But I’m not a dentist.  So kind of weird like that.  I get to take my crazy marketing ideas and actually test them out and if they work, I share them with my Members and they get to use the same stuff that we use to generate patients for my office.  So patient generation is one part of it.  Patient retention is another part that we do a lot of testing and experimenting with.  Anyway, I’m not actually going to talk about patient attraction or retention quite yet. I’m going to talk about de-commoditizing dentistry, how to compete against chains and win.

Check out the youtube video here:

We’re going to talk about de-commoditization ... So there’s three, in dentistry you’re competing against three different factions, if you will.  First of all, you’re competing for discretionary income that patients are spending all over the place, cell phones, Dish network, the car they don’t need, send their kids to private school, paying for school clothes, whatever it is.  There’s all these, some discretionary, some not so, but you’re competing for a dollar that a patient has in their wallet against everybody else that’s also wanting that dollar.  So fast food restaurants, you name it, anybody, anyplace where your patients are spending money, you’re in competition with that.  So they have to either really need or really want and if they need it, they have to still want it, but you’re offering.  So you’re in actual competition with all these folks.  Of course you’re in competition with the big chains.  I call them chain offices or chain dental practices versus corporate because I’m pretty sure most of you have corporations, so you’d all be corporate dentists as well and I’m pretty sure most of you are not.

So I call them chain practices (Big Cartel Dentistry).  So you’re in competition with chain practices and I’ll get into a little bit about vulnerabilities that you can exploit that chains have and I’m going to also talk about your vulnerabilities that you have in your practice and how to turn those into strengths.  There’s also the other aggressive solo or small group practices that you’re competing against.  Some of you in your own, you probably have one or two offices that are very aggressive with marketing.  Every time you turn around, you’re seeing an ad from them.  So you’re in competition with them as well and they’re probably out-marketing you right now if you’re not those one of two dental offices in your area that’s really aggressive in marketing.  So today we’re going to focus on solo and small group practice and chain dentistry, your dental competition.  I’m not going to get into the consumer side because I think that’s, it’s there, there’s nothing you can really do about it.  You just have to be able to, you know, when you get a patient in the chair, outsell anybody else that you’re in competition with for that dollar.
