I just set my cheap little countdown clock that ticks away the minutes to ’15.’ That means, in 15 minutes, I have to have this article done.
When I’m on deadline, this is the best way to get me to focus. And, it forces me to really concentrate on the task at hand.
It’s no different for you.
Do you know that every day you go into an op, that YOU are on deadline?
Your team is, too. So are your patients.
You have to perform your miracle in a set period of time and with a consistent, acceptable outcome, right? So, you’re forced to be productive, because you know darn well that as soon as that crown prep on Mabel is done, her girlfriend Ethel is right behind her for that denture adjustment, then, while Ethel is getting comfortable, Mabel’s husband Earl needs a hygiene check.
Rinse and repeat. So goes your day.
There’s no time for screwing around. There’s work to be done…if you want to get paid, right?
In my work, I run into a lot of “busy” people. Few are productive. Most are just “busy.” Truth be told, most haven’t learned the difference between the two.
What’s sad is that for most dentists I have personally observed in practice, when they are not chairside, they’ve found a way to be “busy,” while opting out of being productive.
Instead of diving into a project that can grow their practice, they retreat to their “smart” phone, or worse, an online game (I had a doc that worked in my office and he was addicted – needless to say, he didn’t last long playing games on my dime.)
Here’s why: Most experienced dentists have a fairly good idea of how to move from op to op, pt to pt, so long as someone (their DAs) is guiding them. The minute that pressure is off, in they go to their office, ON goes the computer, email is opened up, or, they play solitaire or some other stupid game that has nothing to do with making money or being productive.
And they wonder why money’s tight. They wonder why they’re not making as much as the dentist down the street.
Other dentists will swear to me they have no “time” to do the work required for their practice to be mega-successful. (HINT: It’s NOT chairside work. You can hire another dentist to do that.)
After hearing the challenges some dentists face legitimately and others face unnecessarily, I decided to do something about it.
I took every single self-management technique I have ever used, borrowed from others, and found to be useful and packaged them up in a super fast read – the best book available today about being productive and profitable, by allowing you to get a stranglehold on time. For good.
It’s written by a productive entrepreneur (me) for busy entrepreneurs who want to be productive and make more money (you). Plain and simple.
