To achieve long-term stability for our implants, we need to consider multiple factors rather than focusing on a single aspect. In this course, we will primarily focus on four critical factors that influence the long-term stability of implants:

1. Selection of the Implant System: This includes the choice of the implant and abutment retention method, as well as the connection between the implant and abutment. Considerations such as the implant placement site, depth, and the choice of smooth neck implants are essential.
2. Control of the Implant Site:We need to ensure the accuracy of the implant site and reflect on why we may encounter deviations during implantation. Furthermore, we must explore methods to mitigate these risks.
3. Determining the Appropriate Implant Depth: It is crucial to ascertain the correct depth of implantation to minimize bone resorption. Implants also have their biologic width that needs to be considered.
4. Importance of Soft Tissue Around the Implant: The thickness of the soft tissue and the width of the keratinized gingiva are vital for maintaining the long-term stability of the implant. Additionally, in cases where there is insufficient keratinized tissue, we must identify strategies to augment this area. These are the key considerations we need to address.

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • understand which implant system is the most suitable for the patient, and what constitutes a good implant system
  •
  • understand concepts surrounding the axial placement of implants
  •
  • know what is the most reasonable depth for implant placement
  •
  • understand biological width around implants, and how it can improve soft tissue conditions
