UK Software Suppliers Warn NHS Dental Portal Rollout Could Disrupt Claims and Care

Edited by Dentaltown staff

The British Dental Association has urged the government to act on a warning from UK dental software suppliers that the planned rollout of a new NHS Dental Services Portal cannot responsibly proceed without final technical specifications and adequate lead time, raising the risk of disruption to dental claiming, payments, and patient care in England.

In an open letter, the UK Dental Software Suppliers Association said its members are not in a position to deliver the proposed changes to the portal, known as the DSP, which underpins how practices record and claim payment for NHS courses of treatment. The suppliers said the scale and complexity of moving to the new system, spanning multiple regions, contract types, and existing practice workflows, meant they could not responsibly commit without several preconditions being met.

Major system changes require a minimum of six months’ notice from the point at which final technical specifications are agreed, the suppliers said. Implementation had originally been planned for this summer.

Proceeding without those conditions in place would risk disruption to NHS dental claiming, payment processing, and patient care at a time when access to dental care is already under considerable pressure, according to the letter.

BDA Chair Eddie Crouch called it a “ham-fisted approach to implementation” that risks undermining thousands of practices’ ability to deliver care. The association characterized the episode as further evidence of what it sees as a lack of government focus on dentistry.

The BDA noted that a promised consultation on fundamental reform of the NHS dental contract, which ministers told Parliament in April would come before the summer, has since been pushed back to an unspecified date. The portal is part of wider NHS dental contract reforms taking effect in England during 2026.
