Synopsis:
This course is intended to provide dentists and dental hygienists with an understanding of common oral diseases that are non-cancerous in origin. The etiology, clinical manifestations, histologic appearance and radiographic appearance of a variety of diseases/conditions will be discussed. Information concerning herpes simplex infection and recurrent aphthous ulcers will be presented according to etiology and location. Treatment options will also be discussed for each disease/condition.

Specific diseases and/or conditions to be discussed include: Pemphigus vulgaris, Benign mucous membrane pemphigoid, Sjorgen’s syndrome, Lichen planus, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Candidiasis, Herpes Zoster, Sialolith, Paget's Disease, Herpes simplex infection, Aphthous ulcers, and others.


Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:
  • 1. Describe the etiology, clinical appearance, histologic appearance, radiographic appearance and treatment of each of the following diseases or conditions: Pemphigus vulgaris, Benign mucous membrane pemphigoid, Sjorgen's syndrome, Lichen planus, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Candidiasis, Basal cell carcinoma, Herpes Zoster, Sialolith and Paget disease.
  • 2. Recognize the clinical manifestations of each the following diseases or conditions: Pemphigus vulgaris, Benign mucous membrane pemphigoid, Sjorgen's syndrome, Lichen planus, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Candidiasis, Basal cell carcinoma, Herpes Zoster, Sialolith and Paget disease.
  • 3. Compare and contrast recurrent herpes simplex infection and recurrent aphthous ulcer according to etiology, location and treatment.
Description of Speaker:
Deborah Levin-Goldstein is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University. She has been a dental hygiene educator at Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, PA for thirty years. Deborah has presented numerous continuing education courses on a variety of topics to dental and dental hygiene societies. She has published in the Journal of Dental Hygiene and is a contributing author for six chapters in the textbook, Head, Neck and Dental Anatomy, fourth edition.

If dental school instructors/professors could teach as well as she can, dental school would be amazing.... She didn't mention dentists as playing a role in patient diagnosis or treatment at all.... certainly interesting as a CE course in dentaltown
