FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla.—According to the 2015 State of the Industry study from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, only 26 percent of dentists reported that their patients were the primary initiators of cosmetic conversations, a decrease of four percentage points since its previous study in 2013.

It's clear that patients do not realize that they have a cosmetic issue, are hesitant to inquire about treatment or do not understand the positive impact that cosmetic treatment can have on their self-image, as well as their social and professional lives. Therefore, it is up to the dental team to introduce treatment and inspire patients to consider what can often be life-changing recommendations.

PreVu cosmetic simulation software gives dental professionals a subtle approach for initiating cosmetic conversations. Graphically altering a photo of a patient's smile and comparing his or her current smile to a simulated smile showing the potential outcome of treatment will often convince a patient of the cosmetic benefit and help him or her move forward without feeling pressured into treatment. The simulation can be instantly converted into a personalized practice-branded visual aid that can be printed and/or emailed to the patient.

The smile preview has several benefits:

•It allows patients to recognize that they actually have a dental problem, because recognizing that there is a problem is the first step in considering treatment.
•It acts as a visual reference that can extend the dental case presentation as patients move through the decision-making journey after leaving the office.
•It is a marketing piece that can be shared with family, friends and colleagues to gain positive opinions on moving forward with treatment and increase word-of-mouth referrals to the dental practice.
•It can be used in discussions with co-decision makers, who were not present at the dental office, to better understand the recommended treatment in order to agree to commit  the necessary financial resources.

"In today's digital age, dental patients are more informed and have higher expectations than ever before," said PreVu co founder, Joanne Villani, RDH. "Offering PreVu's simulation technology is an inexpensive way to support the perception by both patients and potential patients that a dental practice delivers state-of-the-art care."

The simulation is not a guarantee of treatment results; therefore, each simulation comes with a legal disclaimer. However, it increases case acceptance because patients are able to visualize themselves with a younger, more vibrant and attractive, whiter, brighter, straighter, healthier, or more balanced smile.

With the initial version of PreVu, treatment simulations include a full smile makeover (orthodontics, dental veneers, dentures, crowns, bridges, teeth whitening, gingival grafting and recontouring, and closing spaces between teeth).
