Two graduates of UK dental schools won the support of the Local Dental Committee conference when they called for more Foundation Training (FT) places and a change in the system.

Tom Howe, who graduated in May enjoyed a standing ovation when he told the conference: 'The UK trains the best dentists in the world – now is the time to start looking after them.'

He said it cost British tax-payers roughly £230,000 to train one dentist.

With 130 dental graduates failing to be awarded an FT place for 2012-13, and possibly having to look for work outside the UK, millions of pounds of British investment could go overseas.

Meanwhile, he said, some of the FT places in the UK had been awarded to European dentists.
