AAE Updates Root Canal Safety Fact Sheet to Address Systemic Disease Claims

The American Association of Endodontists released an updated Root Canal Safety Fact Sheet on Aug. 31, adding recent research and patient communication guidance for dentists who field claims that root canal-treated teeth cause systemic disease.

The document states that decades of research contradict the beliefs of focal infection proponents and that there is no valid scientific evidence linking endodontically treated teeth with systemic disease.

The update adds guidance for patient discussions, a summary of emerging evidence on metabolic and inflammatory health, an emphasis on collaboration between dental and medical professionals, and revised references with shareable patient resources.

Among the newer research cited is a two-year longitudinal study by Zhang, Niazi, and colleagues published in the Journal of Translational Medicine in 2025, which followed 65 patients after successful root canal treatment and documented changes in glucose and lipid metabolism and in systemic inflammatory markers. The fact sheet says endodontic treatment may be associated with favorable changes in systemic metabolic and inflammatory markers, and it points to an ongoing longitudinal cohort program at King’s College London examining apical periodontitis as a noncommunicable disease.

The AAE advises dentists to acknowledge patient concerns, provide written educational materials that address root canal myths, direct patients to aae.org, and caution patients about health misinformation on social media, including advice to verify the credentials of online sources. The document also characterizes extraction as the most traumatic dental procedure.

The fact sheet argues for closer cooperation between dental and medical professionals, noting that apical periodontitis affects roughly half of adults and warrants recognition in general medical practice for early detection and management of chronic inflammatory conditions.

Its reference list ranges from Easlick’s 1951 special edition review in JADA, which the AAE credits with shifting practice back toward endodontic treatment, to the World Health Organization’s 2022 Global Oral Health Status Report.

The AAE published the fact sheet as a resource dentists can share with patients and with medical colleagues.
