UC Berkeley Researchers Find Gene Cluster Boosting Oral Bacteria Competition

Posted: September 9, 2025
UC Berkeley researchers have discovered a gene cluster that produces lipopeptide molecules, strengthening biofilms on teeth and aiding beneficial oral bacteria in outcompeting harmful strains. By studying the oral metagenome, the team identified these molecules that could potentially be used for targeted cavity prevention strategies. The research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, sheds light on the genetic level analysis of the oral microbiome.
