Dental Fear on the Rise Among U.S. Adults, NYU Study Finds

Posted: September 2, 2025
A new study from NYU College of Dentistry reveals that nearly three out of four American adults experience dental fear, a significant increase from previous estimates. The research, published in the Journal of the American Dental Association, surveyed 1,003 adults and found that 72.6% reported some level of dental fear. Despite the rising fear, 71.2% of those with moderate or severe fear expressed interest in a free, at-home treatment. The study highlights the need for accessible dental fear treatments, such as the Dental FearLess app developed by NYU researchers. This digital program, incorporating cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness, has shown promising results in reducing fear. Researchers are also exploring the impact of negative childhood dental experiences on fear. The findings suggest a growing need for expanded access to dental anxiety treatment.
