Tea Tree Oil Shows Strong Anti-Plaque Effect in High-Risk Caries Patients

Posted: August 29, 2025
A recent study published in Scientific Reports reveals that tea tree oil (TTO) could be beneficial for high-risk caries patients by inhibiting the growth of cariogenic bacteria and preventing biofilm formation. Researchers at the University of Saskatchewan found that a 12.5% TTO concentration completely inhibited bacterial growth in vitro, reduced carious lesions in a rat model, and did not affect reparative dentin formation. This study highlights TTO as a potent antimicrobial agent against key oral bacteria, offering a potential natural alternative to traditional preventive strategies like chlorhexidine. While TTO-based mouthwashes may limit plaque accumulation with fewer side effects, further clinical studies are needed to confirm its preventive benefits in broader patient populations.
