Nitric Acid vs. Phosphoric Acid in Cervical Carious Lesions: Clinical Trial Results

Posted: September 1, 2025
A randomized clinical trial compared the performance of nitric acid with a mineral-enriched adhesive system to phosphoric acid with a universal adhesive in restoring cervical carious lesions. Both approaches showed similar outcomes in terms of postoperative sensitivity, retention, secondary caries, and marginal adaptation. However, after 18 months, the phosphoric acid group exhibited increased marginal discoloration. Nitric acid demonstrated a 50% lower risk of sensitivity compared to phosphoric acid. The study suggests that combining nitric acid with a mineral-enriched system is a promising strategy for treating cervical carious lesions.
