Study Reveals Incidence of Traumatic Dental Injuries During Intubation in Pediatric Patients Under General Anesthesia

Posted: January 4, 2025
This study investigated the incidence of traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) during oral tracheal intubation in pediatric patients under general anesthesia. The study revealed an incidence of TDIs at 16.00%, with most injuries affecting intraoral soft tissues, especially the maxillary incisors. Factors like occlusal stage, intubation difficulty, and certain anatomical distances were correlated with TDIs. Despite skilled anesthetists, TDIs cannot be entirely avoided, highlighting the importance of preoperative oral examinations by anesthesiologists to reduce risks. Dental professionals play a crucial role in assessing and preventing dental injuries during intubation, emphasizing the need for awareness and prevention protocols.
