IV Sedation for Adults with Acquired Brain Injury in Dental Treatment: A Game-Changing Service Evaluation

Posted: December 30, 2024
The article evaluates the use of intravenous (IV) sedation with midazolam for adults with profound acquired brain injury undergoing dental treatment. The study conducted over seven years at the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability showed that dentist-led IV sedation is safe and effective for this patient cohort. Key findings include a high success rate (91%) in completing treatment, minor complications in 7.9% of cases with no harm to patients, and the prevalence of strokes as the primary cause of acquired brain injury. The service evaluation highlights the importance of experienced clinicians, careful monitoring, and tailored sedation techniques for patients with complex medical needs. It also emphasizes the significance of providing patient-centered sedation services for individuals with disabilities in primary and secondary care settings.
