AAOS Issues New Dental Procedure Recommendations for Joint Replacement Patients

Posted: December 18, 2024
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) has released updated guidelines on dental procedures for patients with joint replacements, emphasizing the importance of preventing periprosthetic joint infections (PJI). The guidelines address antibiotic use and timing of dental procedures before or after total knee or hip arthroplasty to reduce the risk of infection. While routine use of prophylactic antibiotics before dental procedures may not reduce PJI risk, patients should be informed about the potential risks of poor oral hygiene. The guidelines also provide recommendations on the timing of dental procedures before and after joint replacements to minimize infection risks. It highlights specific intervals for different types of dental procedures in relation to elective arthroplasty surgeries.
