Probiotics as Adjunctive Therapy in Periodontitis Treatment: A Clinical Perspective

Posted: December 16, 2024
Probiotics have shown promise as adjunctive therapy in periodontitis treatment, with potential benefits in inhibiting pathogenic species, modulating the immune response, and restoring the oral microbiome balance. Clinical studies have demonstrated improvements in pocket depth reduction, bleeding on probing reduction, and clinical attachment level gain. However, long-term follow-up periods revealed variability and potential regression in effects, raising questions about the efficacy of probiotic therapy. Future research should focus on optimizing probiotic strains, dosing, and intervention periods for personalized treatment in preventive dentistry.
