NHS Dental Treatment Boost Plan Faces Setback, Urgent Reform Needed

Posted: November 27, 2024
The National Audit Office reports that the £200 million plan to boost NHS dental treatments is not on track, with slow progress and missed targets. The plan aimed to increase treatments by 1.5 million in 2024-25 through increased payments for dentists and mobile dental vans. However, the goals for this year are likely to be missed, and the NHS would still fall short of 2018-19 activity levels. Dentists criticized the plan for lacking ambition and failing to incentivize NHS work. Fundamental reform of the NHS dental contract is deemed necessary, according to the British Dental Association. Health Minister Stephen Kinnock acknowledges the need for further measures to improve access.
