Notes from the International Research Meeting in Barcelona
– by Trisha E. O’Hehir, RDH, BS, Hygienetown Editorial Director

More than 6,600 people from all over the world gathered in Barcelona, Spain, in mid-July 2010. The IADR (International Association of Dental Research) General Session attracted researchers, educators and those interested in research, like me, to come learn from the nearly 5,000 abstracts presented. The four-day event offered an onslaught of information. It's crucial to plan for a meeting of this magnitude by selecting only those topics of greatest interest to you and forgoing all the rest. Time just doesn't allow you to visit all the sessions or all the abstracts.
Within the IADR, there are 24 scientific groups, which members can join. The Oral Health Research Group is primarily focused on prevention. I belong to this group. All the meeting abstracts are submitted to a specific research group for approval and then presentation of abstracts is organized by research group, making it very easy to focus on your areas of interest.

Research groups also present symposia of significant interest and timely topics, usually with four speakers. I attended symposia on xylitol, halitosis, periodontal inflammation and biofilm formation.

The Distinguished Lecture Series is a highlight of the meeting, with a world-renowned speaker each day presenting cutting-edge information from many scientific genres. Francisco Fernández-Avilés, of Madrid, Spain, reported on stem cells in cardiovascular therapy, a fascinating topic of the advances in tissue regeneration. Thomas Lehner, of London, England, focused on oral immunology, and the work-to-date on developing a vaccine for dental disease. Harald zur Hausen, of Heidelberg, Germany, spoke about infectious causes of human cancers. Up to 21 percent of global cancer is now linked to infectious events including viral, bacterial and parasitic agents.

It wasn't all work though; there was time for fun at this meeting as well, beginning with the welcome reception and formal opening where many of the year's research awards were presented. Research groups had their own receptions. The Oral Health Research Group had a reception sponsored by Colgate. The social highlight of the meeting is the President's Party, this year held at a lovely outdoor restaurant in the hills of Barcelona.

Every two years, the IADR meeting and the AADR meeting are held together in a U.S. city. Next year the meeting will be held in San Diego, March 16-19, 2011. You're sure to find a few topics of interest among so many presentations. Check it out; see if it is something of interest to you.
