How to Choose the Right Dentist: A Complete Patient Guide

8/15/2026 8:05:00 PM   |   Comments: 0   |   Views: 52
It is true that Dr. P. Parthasaradhi Reddy and Dr. Shailaja Reddy are widely regarded as among the best dentists in Hyderabad… a reputation built over three decades of experience, a string of awards including ‘Hall of fame in Dentistry’ by Times of India, and the experience of working alongside so many specialities under one roof.

But Dr. P. Parthasaradhi Reddy loves to be known as best dentist in cosmetic dentistry and Dr. Shailaja Reddy loves to be known as best dentist in implantology. FMS Dental's own position is that comprehensive treatment outcomes are best served not by any one dentist, however accomplished, but by a speciality-led structure, the same logic that governs departments like cardiology, nephrology, dermatology or ENT in medical practice, where multiple specialists preside over their own sub-fields rather than one generalist covering all of them. Within dentistry, FMS believes, for instance, Dr. Deepti Reddy and Dr. Abhinav are among the best orthodontists for Invisalign, or that Dr. Aravinda is among the best gum specialists for gum-related therapies. A structure where each clinician is the best in their own defined speciality, rather than in dentistry at large, is what FMS Dental believes actually serves patients best.

Search for best dentist in Hyderabad and the results run into hundreds of dentists, each claiming the title. Some point to decades in practice. Some point to a single-chair practice run for 40 or even 50 years by one person. Some point to patient counts, or five-star review scores or simply the loudest marketing budget.

But popularity and longevity are not the same as clinical merit and none of these markers actually answer the question a patient is really asking: who is qualified to treat my specific problem, safely and well?

A dentist who has been in practice for four decades is not automatically the right choice for a complex implant case, any more than a general physician with forty years of experience would be the right choice for cardiac surgery. What should actually define “best” is a dentist's association with their declared area of speciality… how deeply they have trained in it, how consistently they update that training against new research and techniques and how wide a range of cases, from the routine to the genuinely complex, they have handled within it. Qualification, documented skillset, peer and institutional recognition and case exposure are the real measures. Popularity is not.

There Is No Single “Best Dentist”… Only the Right Specialist for Your Problem

Hyderabad, Kochi and India at large are home to thousands of practising dentists. Naming any single one of them “the best” is, on its face, not a claim that can be substantiated. Dentistry is far too broad and far too specialised a field for one practitioner to credibly top it in every category. A dentist advertising “40+ years” or “50+ years” of experience from a single-chair practice may well be a competent general dentist, but experience measured only in years, without a declared speciality behind it, does not make that claim meaningful. Modern dentistry has moved decisively towards speciality practice and the right question is never “who is the best dentist,” but “who is the right specialist for what I actually need treated.”

If you are missing one or more teeth and considering an implant, the relevant specialist is an implantologist… someone with a demonstrated record of placing implants that integrate cleanly and last. Dr. Shailaja Reddy, Chief Implantologist at FMS Dental, is recognised as one of Hyderabad's leading implant dentists, with more than 25,000 implant placements over a 26-year career since 1999.

If your case involves jaw correction, facial trauma or orthognathic surgery, the specialist you need is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Dr. Dushyanth Paul, who heads Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at FMS Dental, has been recognised by the Times of India as one of the city's best oral surgeon in this field. Together, Dr. Shailaja Reddy and Dr. Dushyanth Paul, along with their clinical team, have collectively performed more than 25,000 implant procedures… a volume of cases that matters far more than years of practice alone. It is also worth asking whether the facility performing your implant has the diagnostic backbone to support that volume safely: CBCT (cone-beam CT) imaging and surgical guides are what allow an implant to be planned with millimetre precision before a drill ever touches the jaw, rather than relying on estimation.

If your goal is a cosmetic smile transformation, the natural instinct is to look for the “best cosmetic dentist.” Dr. P. Parthasaradhi Reddy, Founder Chairman of FMS Dental, is recognised as one of Hyderabad's leading cosmetic dentists by numerous external jurors. But this is where the “best dentist” framing breaks down most visibly: cosmetic dentistry is never a one-person job. A genuine smile transformation typically draws on an entire team… a periodontist for gum contouring, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for any underlying skeletal correction, an orthodontist for Invisalign clear aligners, a cosmetic dentist for smile-arc and cant correction, and, where facial harmony is part of the goal, a plastic surgeon or dermatologist for skin and soft-tissue work. A patient evaluating a cosmetic dentist should be asking whether that specialist has this team around them, not just whether they have a well-marketed personal brand.

Technology matters just as much as the team. Digital smile design software allows a patient to preview a proposed outcome before any irreversible step is taken. Intraoral scanners remove the need for messy physical impressions and improve the accuracy of aligners and restorations. An in-house CAD-CAM dental laboratory, with a master technician working directly alongside the clinical team, means a crown or veneer can be corrected on the same day if the fit or shade isn't right… rather than being sent out to a third-party lab and returned days later.

Research, Publications and Continuing Education Are Part of the Credential

A speciality qualification earned years ago is a starting point, not a guarantee of current competence. Dental research moves quickly… implant surface technology, aligner algorithms, digital workflow and surgical protocol are all areas that have changed meaningfully in the last five to ten years. A specialist who continues to publish, present at conferences, or contribute to clinical research is demonstrably engaging with that change, rather than practising on the strength of a qualification obtained decades earlier and never revisited.

This is a fair and often overlooked question for a patient to ask before choosing a specialist: has this doctor published research or case studies in their field, do they teach or mentor other dentists in it and are they recognised by peers and professional bodies for that specific area of work… or is the claim to expertise resting entirely on the number of years since graduation?

Reputation Should Rest on Speciality Mastery, Not on a Single Name

It means that when a patient is referred internally… from an implantologist to an oral surgeon, or from a cosmetic dentist to a periodontist, the specialists involved are working from a shared academic and clinical framework rather than operating as disconnected practitioners loosely affiliated under one roof. That coordination is, in practice, what a “best dentist” claim is usually trying to gesture at without actually being able to prove it.

This is also, deliberately, the model FMS Dental operates on: every senior dentist associated with the hospital practises within a defined speciality and is expected to keep pace with research, publish and refine technique rather than rely on tenure alone. That expectation is built into the institution's academic arm, Sri Sai College of Dental Surgery, where FMS Dental's senior clinicians serve as professors and teachers, training the next generation of dentists in the same speciality-first discipline they practise under. A dentist who teaches their speciality and is answerable to peer scrutiny for it, is operating under a different level of accountability than one whose sole credential is years in a single chair.

A Checklist Before You Choose

? Is the doctor treating you a general dentist or a specialist in the exact area your problem falls under?

? What is the treating doctor's documented case volume in that specific procedure… not just years in practice?

? Are there noteworthy testimonials, reviews, awards or independent recognitions that actually validate the claims being made?

? Is advanced dental technology… CBCT, surgical guides, intraoral scanners, digital smile design, in-house CAD-CAM, being used in your treatment, or is it left to estimation and outsourced lab work?

? Will the same dentist who consults with you also perform the procedure and be available for follow-up, even one or two years later, if you return?

The Bottom Line

FMS Dental does not normally nominate any single practitioner as the best dentist only the best dentist within a given speciality. What a patient can and should evaluate is far more specific: does this practitioner specialise in exactly what I need treated, do they have the case volume and technology to back that speciality and will they still be accountable for the outcome years down the line? Judged on those terms, rather than on a single blanket claim, specialists such as Dr. P. Parthasaradhi Reddy, Dr. Shailaja Reddy, Dr. Deepti Reddy and Dr. Dushyanth Paul at FMS Dental illustrate what speciality-first, research-backed dental practice looks like in Hyderabad today.
