Edward Zuckerberg to speak at Geneva dental congress held in a cinema

Swiss continuing-education provider Acadent will hold the second edition of its dental congress on Wednesday 3 September 2026 at the Pathé Balexert cinema in Geneva. The day runs from 9am to 6.30pm and is open to dentists and dental hygienists. Dr Edward J. Zuckerberg, known to the profession as Painless Dr. Z, speaks in the English-language track.



Who is behind the congress

Acadent is directed by Dr Fabien Hauser, who also runs the Centre Médico-Dentaire Balexert (cmdbalexert.ch), a multidisciplinary dental centre located in the Balexert shopping centre in Geneva. Hauser qualified in human medicine at the University of Geneva in 2002, practised internal medicine at the Geneva and Fribourg university hospitals, then completed dental training in Geneva in 2006. He earned a doctorate in dental medicine in 2011 and an SSO certificate in oral implantology in 2013. In Geneva, the team he leads brings together general and paediatric dentistry, orthodontics, oral surgery, implantology, dental hygiene and prophylaxis under one roof.

The English-language track

Three speakers share the dentists' room, and the programme is delivered in English.

Dr Edward J. Zuckerberg covers the emerging trends reshaping clinical practice. He is a long-standing advocate of early technology adoption in the dental office, lectures on technology integration and online reputation for practitioners, and advises dental and medical technology start-ups. He delivered the keynote at dentech 2024, and is also known outside the profession as the father of Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg.

His angle has stayed consistent over the years. He looks at what a practice can actually implement rather than at what a technology promises, which is a useful filter at a point where every supplier claims to be reinventing the workflow. For a European audience, hearing that assessment from someone who has both run a practice and sat on the investor side of the table is the main draw of the session.

Professor Andreas Filippi presents new approaches and advances in dental traumatology, a field where treatment protocols have moved considerably and where the first hours after an injury often decide the outcome.

Géraldine Fasnacht closes the track with a session on precision, managed risk and human performance. Acadent frames it as an outside perspective rather than a clinical lecture, which is a deliberate choice for a congress built around anticipating change.

The French-language track

A parallel room addresses dental hygienists and prophylaxis assistants, in French, from 2pm to 6.30pm.

Professor Andrea Mombelli opens with the role of probiotics in periodontal care. PD Marwa Abdelaziz follows on recent developments in diagnostics and therapy. Marie-Laure Grandjean closes with caries prevention strategy.

Acadent groups the two rooms under three themes running through the day. Dental trauma and current management protocols. The connections between oral health and general health. And the technological developments already changing how practices operate.

A cinema instead of a lecture hall

Holding a scientific congress in a movie theatre is not only a matter of comfort, though tiered seating and a full-size screen do more for a clinical photograph than a hotel ballroom projector. It also sets a different tone. Acadent has committed to it fully, popcorn and soft drinks included, and schedules a closing session for attendees to talk over what they have heard.

The format matches what the organisers say they are after. Two audiences that usually train separately, dentists and hygienists, spend the day in the same building and meet at the end of it.

Why Geneva

Renato Di Gisi, delegate at the ARCAM economic development agency, has publicly backed the event. His argument is that French-speaking Switzerland has become fertile ground for companies building the technologies the profession will use next, and that the region makes it unusually easy for research, industry and clinical practice to talk to each other.

That proximity is what the congress is trying to put in one room for a day. It also explains why an American speaker with a Silicon Valley network fits a Geneva programme rather than sitting oddly in it.
