(A). Use of vitamin supplements
(B). Sjögren syndrome
(C). Anti-hypertensive medication
(D). Radiation therapy

Xerostomia, or dryness of the mouth, can result because of many different factors:

  • Side effect of medications such as anti-hypertensive drugs (especially diuretics), anti-anxiety drugs (clozapine - Clozaril), anti-histamine drugs (e.g., Benadryl), anti-depressant drugs (e.g., citalopram - Celexa), anti-emetic drugs (e.g., AlkaSeltzer), anti-Parkinson’s drugs (e.g., Levodopa)
  • Diseases such as Sjogren's or diabetes
  • Radiation therapy if salivary glands are destroyed

Supplemental vitamin intake will not produce xerostomia, and on the contrary is more likely to help provide nutrients necessary for the maintenance of a healthier oral environment.

Answer: (A). Use of vitamin supplements
