Oral cancer, a journey of cancer, grief and finding a purpose

by Dr. Parul Dua Makkar

Oral cancer is one of the fastest cancers. It is the 6th most common cancer worldwide. We as dental professionals are at the forefront of this. This course will go into what is causing the increase, how to better document treatment options and how to help your patients beyond the diagnosis.

Failure to detect oral cancer is the 2nd most common reason that dentists get sued. So screening is not only beneficial for your patients, but also you and your practice. The key to saving lives is early detection, being more knowledgeable on how to properly screen patients will enable you to help save lives.

This course is a comprehensive look from statistics, cause of cancer, screening, different modalities, documenting, treatment options, and providing post treatment management. It will also address the concept of grief while we are suffering in silence, have a loved one going through it or battling as a provider for a patient. As you attend this course, you will also get an opportunity to get free resources.

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Understand how oral cancer is defined, risk factors, causes and prevention
  •
  • Understand what HPV is and its role in oral cancer.
  •
  • How to document soft and hard tissue lesions
  •
  • Learn the screening process of oral cancer
  •
  • Learn pre, post and care during cancer treatment.
  •
  • Learn what is grieving and how to be an empathetic provider.
