The human workforce is the driving force of any business. Highly skilled and experienced individuals that comprise the US labor force impacts the economic growth of the country.

Despite technological advancements, the labor force continues to lead in meeting the ever-changing business needs and models. Statistics revealed that the employment rate in America spiked up to almost 60.90 % in August from its initial rate of 60.70% in July.

Valuing the Employees’ Welfare

Prioritizing the people is the top priority of most organizations mandated through various initiatives that protect and engage employees. The Occupational Health and Safety Organization enforces employment policies that protect workers from health and safety hazards. Thus, companies organize a Joint Health and Safety Committee to comply with the law and ensure that duties concerning workplace safety are adequately set out.

A joint health and safety committee also ensures the continuous improvement of the conditions on the job. Most businesses believe that the welfare of its people will further drive productivity. The committee organizes a forum between the management and the employees to collaborate on practical measures that prevent and resolve health and hazard issues. It also enables the organization to strategize and execute plans for improving the work environment.

Specific Roles of the Committee

Convergence between company policies and specific labor-related tasks is one of the agenda in organizing the committee. However, it is not limited to this as the committee also undertakes various roles and responsibilities. The committee is expected to:

  •  Reviews reports of occupational injury and illnesses. That also includes a detailed case analysis and extensive research on the whole case to identify job problems
  •
  • Conducts regular inspections around the work area to identify possible threats to health and safety.
  •
  • Proposes strategies to improve safety conditions
  •
  • Evaluate corrective actions by the management and collects further information to sustain its effectivity
  •
  • Participates in workshops and seminars conducted by subject matter experts to be updated with the latest news on safety and hazard issues.

Education and Awareness

  • Establishes procedures in reporting safety hazards and encourages employees to give out recommendations
  •
  • Responds to employees’ concerns and reports
  •
  • Drafts a training plan for new employees to learn essential health and safety practices, and refresher courses to employees and manager
  •
  • Raises awareness on the latest issues concerning health and safety by informing them through announcements, and newsletters.

Investigations and Follow-Through

  • Investigates accidents, which includes research and case analysis of the possible root causes.
  •
  • Makes recommendations for possible corrective actions.

Planning

  • Maintains procedural plans by regularly reviewing inspection reports
  •
  • Tracks newly implemented safety and health rules and ensure that everything is strictly practiced.
  •
  • Evaluates effectivity of programs aimed to develop a healthy and safe workplace.
  •
  • Monitors progress on health and safety issues.

A Health and Safety Committee is essential in driving the labor force of any businesses to their maximum potentials. Not only does it protect employees from hazards issues, but it also enables cooperation between management and employees to achieve common goals.
