Finding hardworking and trustworthy employees isn't always cut and dry. While most candidates do look good on paper, once hired, things can go downhill quickly. From inattentive office staff to inexperienced dental hygienists, hiring the right people for your dental office is a must.

To make the process a little less painful, here are six essential tips that every business owner needs to know on how to hire the best workers for their office.

Come Up With a Hiring Strategy

After completing the job description, the first step to finding the right employee is coming up with a hiring strategy. An easy way to do this is to set up a meeting with the current employees. You’ll need to have the hiring manager present as they’re essential to planning process. Using this meeting, you can discuss various options and outcomes to come up with the best way to hire a new employee. If you’re a veteran dentist with a trusted team, you can ask your current employees how they felt about their interview process and what type of person would be the best fit.

Create a Checklist

Every business has specific requirements candidates need to meet. If this is your first time recruiting, make a list of everything that you’re hoping to see in potential candidates. If you running a dental office, for example, you need to hire someone who is personable and understanding. During the interview, ask about difficult situations the candidates were confronted with and how they handled a disgruntled patient.

Even if candidates don't meet everything you have on your checklist, don’t brush off potential employees just yet. Yes, they need to fit a large majority of them, but if they’re inexperienced and just entering the workforce. With the proper training, they can turn into one of the best employees you’ve ever had.

Describe the Job in Detail

There’s more to an office than just the receptionist and manager. Each office is unique and has their own roles that need to be filled. If you need an employee for a specific job, make sure to describe the job in great detail. Doing so makes it easier to screen applicants and see if they’re qualified for the position.

Thoroughly Read Applications and Credentials

Although it might feel tedious, it’s crucial that you carefully go through every application. Review every credential that an applicant has and see if it fits with the position you’re trying to fill. Skimming through can lead you to hire the wrong person for the job and have to let them go, which isn’t good for both cases.

Scope Out Potential Employees

If a candidate catches your eye, reach out to them as soon as possible. Just because they seem like a good fit doesn't mean they are the right one for the job. Pre screening candidates gives you a good idea of who you should invite for an interview.

Ask the Right Interview Questions

Once you’ve found your ideal candidate and scheduled an interview, you’ll need to ask a series of questions. You can start off with the basics such as what their hobbies are, where they’re from and if they have any experience in the field. You can also ask what they are looking for in their next position. Listen with an open mind before wrapping things up.

Once you've followed up with the exit interview questions, take the time to consider whether or not they're right for this job. Take the time to think about each candidate, their qualifications and their overall disposition. Sometimes, the best candidates aren't ones with years of experience.

Regardless of whether you run a dental practice or another type of business, finding the right employees is essential. Learn from your prior hiring mistakes and take note of each candidates demeanor when being interviewed. Lastly, take some time before making that final decision and bringing on a new team member.
