Henry Schein and Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity Honor Ohio Dentists
Henry Schein recently joined the Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity's (AO) Columbus, Ohio, chapter in recognizing 13 area oral health professionals for their participation in a program that provides free dental care to Holocaust survivors in need.
The Alpha Omega-Henry Schein Cares Holocaust Survivors Oral Health Program was launched in November 2014 in response to the White House's call to action to help Holocaust survivors age with dignity and respect. To date, the program has provided free oral care to more than 200 economically vulnerable Holocaust survivors across North America, including more than a dozen in Columbus.
The participating dentists were honored at a recent reception hosted by Jewish Family Services in Columbus. U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) congratulated the honorees, AO, and Henry Schein Cares in a certificate of commendation presented at the reception.
The initiative provides care to people identified by the network of Jewish Family and Children's Service agencies or other identified partner organizations, as well as people of any faith who were victims of Nazi persecution and meet the program's other eligibility requirements. In addition to financial need, patient participation is prioritized by three critical factors: the elimination of pain, restoration of function, and lack of dental coverage. Participating clinicians determine each patient's scope of care.
This program fills a critical need for many of the 120,000 Holocaust survivors living in the U.S., one quarter of whom live in poverty. Survivors often have special oral health needs, as many suffered from prolonged nutritional deprivation and had little to no dental care access as children during World War II. The program currently operates in 15 areas, including parts of the U.S. and Canada.

Vigilant Biosciences
Awarded Grant for Oral
Cancer Diagnostic System
Vigilant Biosciences, a developer of solutions that aid in the early detection and intervention of cancer, has received a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research grant of $219,454 from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.
The 15-month grant will fund research by Vigilant Biosciences to develop a diagnostic test that utilizes optical imaging in combination with an oral rinse to detect CD44, a tumor-initiating and stem cell-associated biomarker for oral cancer.
Vigilant Biosciences' current product line is based on patented technology that measures an unprecedented combination of CD44 and total protein levels—markers clinically validated to be associated specifically with oral cancer when measured in an oral rinse—to aid clinicians in the early detection and intervention of oral cancer.
The phase I preclinical study will include in vitro work as well as human tissues from cancer patients and patients with benign disease of the throat.

Southern Illinois University Dental Medicine Students
Receive ISDS Scholarships
The Illinois State Dental Society (ISDS) Foundation has selected two Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine (SIU SDM) students Spencer Blackham and Sonny Song for $3,000 scholarship awards.
Fourth-year dental student Blackham received the David C. Shapiro Memorial Scholarship for senior dental students. Song, a third-year dental student, is the recipient of the Paul W. Clopper Scholarship Grant for junior dental students.
The Shapiro scholarship is available to two dental students who will be seniors in the fall 2016 semester. It is based on academic and clinical excellence, as well as financial need, student activities and community involvement. The scholarship memorializes Shapiro's civic leadership and dedication to the dental profession.
The Clopper scholarship is available to three dental students who will be juniors in the fall 2016 semester. It is based on academic and clinical excellence as well as financial need, student activities and community involvement. The scholarship memorializes the civic leadership and dedication to the dental profession of Clopper, the founder of the ISDS Foundation.
In 2016, the ISDS Foundation expects to award $18,000 in scholarships to qualified dental students succeeding academically and have committed themselves to community involvement. The funds are focused on the programs of Illinois' three dental schools: SIU SDM, University of Illinois College of Dentistry in Chicago and Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine—Illinois.
