The Wisdom Tooth

Celebrating birthdays and anniversaries in the office creates good moral, but I’m going broke on birthday cake. What do I do?

WT: The point of celebrating birthdays and anniversaries is to make your staff members feel appreciated and recognized. Mark the day with a handwritten card and small gift. This way the person feels acknowledged and special. Then group the actual celebrations seasonally. Have an ice cream cone celebration in July for all the summer birthdays and anniversaries; bring in gourmet hot cocoa in January for all the winter ones. Birthday cake should never make anyone sad.

One of my coworkers heats up her lunch in the microwave. It’s fish and it smells up the whole office. How should I broach the issue?

WT: Good question. Fight fire with fire. Turn the microwave and surrounding area into a no-man’s land. Counter that fish smell with a bag of popcorn left in for a minute too long. Once the popping has died down and the smoke has cleared, you’ll have made your point without even an uttered word.
My mother-in-law is coming in for treatment next week. Pretty sure she’ll try to get by without paying, but I don’t have the authority to give away treatment. What should I do?

WT: Oh no you don’t. Don’t try to drag me into the next family feud. Maybe she was right. Maybe her daughter should have married the other guy.
