Nuts & Bolts Occlusion… Occlusal Instrumentation Simplified

Speaker:Michael J. Melkers, DDS, FAGD

Synopsis: The use of occlusal instrumentation – facebows and programmable articulators – can be a valuable tool in diagnostic and restorative dentistry. Frequently though, the benefits, efficacy, efficiency and investment of this technology into bread and butter restorative practices has been brought into question. Is it worth it? Do I really need that? Isn’t that just a big waste of time? What does all of that really do?

In this comfortably paced presentation, Melkers explores the challenges that we can face in the bread and butter restorative practice and the solutions that occlusal instrumentation can facilitate in our diagnostic and restorative treatment. Melkers guides us through the methodology, as well as the rationale for occlusal instrumentation, its programming and centric relation-based dentistry; leading to more predictable, practical and profitable patient care.

Educational objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to achieve the following:

  • Be aware of some of the challenges that affect our success in diagnostic and restorative dentistry.
  • Become familiar with the components, purposes and advantages of occlusal instrumentation.
  • Be aware of the consequences of not using programmed instrumentation in diagnostic and restorative dentistry.
  • Understand the rationale for “CR” based diagnostic and restorative dentistry.
