Why I Made the Switch: EdgeOnyx X-Find

One of the most challenging aspects of endodontic treatment is negotiating the coronal portion of the canal and establishing a predictable pathway into the root canal system. Whether searching for an MB2, managing calcified anatomy, or treating patients with limited mouth opening, the right orifice opener can make a significant difference.

Over the years, I have used numerous orifice openers. While many were effective, I often found them either too aggressive, prone to unwinding, or lacking the tactile control needed in difficult cases.

The EdgeOnyx X-Find has changed that for me.

What immediately stands out is its unique design. The X-Find features a size 09 tip with a .09 taper, providing an ideal balance between flexibility and cutting efficiency. The small size 09 tip allows the instrument to enter and follow the natural anatomy of the canal rather than forcing its way into dentin. At the same time, the .09 taper efficiently removes coronal restrictions and creates straight-line access for subsequent instruments.

This combination is particularly useful when locating MB2 canals or negotiating calcified canal entrances. The file selectively removes dentin where needed while maintaining excellent control and visibility. Rather than creating excessive enlargement coronally, it develops a conservative yet effective pathway into the canal system.

Another feature I appreciate is its compact 15 mm overall length. In patients with restricted opening or when treating second molars, the shorter instrument is noticeably easier to maneuver. It improves access under the microscope, reduces hand piece interference, and provides a more comfortable working experience.

Perhaps most importantly, the X-Find has proven remarkably durable. Despite frequent use in challenging anatomy, I have found it highly resistant to distortion and separation. That reliability, combined with the thoughtful size 09 tip and .09 taper design, allows me to focus on locating and negotiating canals with confidence.

For me, the X-Find has become the ideal instrument for establishing initial canal access. It is efficient, conservative, durable, and particularly effective in the challenging cases that make up much of modern endodontic practice.
