A Practical Anki Remote Setup for Dental School Review

For dental school review, set up a MODI Anki remote around the card types you actually see: text prompts, image occlusion cards, radiographs, anatomy labels, and answer buttons. MODI is an independent Bluetooth controller, not an official Anki product, and its role is input control. Use Keyboard Mode for a desktop setup with preset review keys, or Switch Mode when you want mobile gamepad-style controls in AnkiMobile or AnkiDroid.

The practical goal is simple: keep your review hand on the remote while your eyes stay on the image or question. That does not change how Anki grades, schedules, or teaches the material. It only gives you another way to trigger supported actions such as reveal, Again, Hard, Good, Easy, Undo, and audio replay where the app accepts those inputs. Build the setup from the app outward, then adjust MODI mode only when the software needs a different input profile. The current product and compatibility notes for Anki remote for dental students provide a useful reference when comparing this workflow with a keyboard or general controller.

Dental decks often depend on dense images, so choose controls that let you reveal and answer without shifting attention away from the figure. On desktop Anki in Keyboard Mode, MODI sends preset keyboard inputs, including Spacebar and direction-key navigation, which can fit many image-heavy review sessions. Desktop Anki itself supports common keyboard controls such as Space or Enter to show the answer or choose Good, and number keys for answer buttons when those buttons are available in the current review state.

For image cards, avoid assigning too many actions to similar buttons at first. A useful starting layout is reveal or Good on the easiest-to-reach input, with Again, Hard, and Easy on nearby buttons you can identify without looking down. If a deck uses audio, Replay Audio can stay available in Switch Mode defaults. Treat this as a review-control layout, not an image-analysis shortcut; the remote cannot interpret labels, radiographs, diagrams, screenshots, or pathology images for you.

Answers

Answer actions should match how you normally grade dental cards. MODI can help you trigger supported review choices, but the meaning of Again, Hard, Good, and Easy still comes from Anki or the mobile app. On desktop, Keyboard Mode includes preset inputs for Again, Hard, Good or Next, and Easy. On mobile, AnkiMobile and AnkiDroid provide their own configurable action lists, so the exact available commands come from those apps rather than from MODI alone.

When setting answer actions, make the grading buttons hard to confuse. Dental review can include small visual differences, so an accidental Easy when you meant Again can be more disruptive than reaching for the keyboard once. Test the layout on a low-stakes deck or a short filtered session before using it during a longer review block. If a command does not fire, check app configuration first, then Bluetooth mode, because both layers have to agree.

Undo

Undo deserves a dedicated place in a dental-school layout because image cards invite occasional mis-taps or premature answers. MODI supports Undo in Keyboard Mode presets, and Switch Mode defaults also include Undo. Keep it separate from the main answer cluster so you do not trigger it accidentally while grading. The button should be reachable, but not so central that normal reveal-and-answer movement lands on it during every card.

Use Undo as a correction tool, not as a habit that replaces careful grading. If Undo works on desktop but not on mobile, remember that the mobile app's configured actions determine what each input does after pairing. In AnkiMobile, configure gamepad actions under Settings, Review, Gamepads. In AnkiDroid, configure controls under Settings, Controls, Set Key Binds. If the action list changes after an app update, revisit those settings before assuming the remote failed.

Desktop

For a desktop dental review setup on macOS, Windows, or Linux, Keyboard Mode is the simplest documented starting point. Open the computer's Bluetooth settings, hold A and Home for one second, and select the MODI connection. A solid green center LED indicates a successful Keyboard Mode connection. No Anki add-on is required for the default Keyboard Mode workflow, which matters if you only need standard review inputs during image and text-card practice.

If you want custom remapping on desktop, use Switch Mode with the optional MODI Anki add-on instead. The add-on code is 406900239, and desktop Anki installs add-ons through Tools, Add-ons, Get Add-ons, followed by a restart. Open MODI Anki Remote from the menu to configure buttons. Add-ons extend desktop Anki and can require updates after Anki changes, so separate add-on troubleshooting from basic Bluetooth pairing when diagnosing a problem.

Mobile

For iPhone, iPad, and Android review, use Switch Mode as the standard MODI mobile setup. Open Bluetooth settings, hold Y and Home for one second, and select the MODI connection. A solid blue center LED indicates a successful Switch Mode connection. In AnkiMobile, assign actions in Settings, Review, Gamepads. In AnkiDroid, assign actions in Settings, Controls, Set Key Binds, using the app's available command list.

AnkiDroid has one important label issue to know before configuring dental review buttons. Because of a third-party display mapping issue, X-Y-B-A inputs can appear as Y-X-A-B in the AnkiDroid menu. That is a visual label mismatch, not proof that the assignment cannot work. Press each MODI button during setup and bind the command by observed response. Then test reveal, answer choices, Undo, and any replay command on a few cards before committing.

Switching

If the remote was previously paired in another mode or with another device, clear the saved Bluetooth entries before judging the new setup. When changing from Keyboard Mode to Switch Mode, or moving from a laptop to a phone, forget every saved MODI or Anki remote entry in Bluetooth settings. Then repeat the full pairing steps for the desired mode. Pressing Home later wakes MODI and reconnects in the last-used mode when the saved connection is still valid.

For image-heavy dental decks, troubleshoot in a strict order: battery and lights, Bluetooth connection, mode, then app action settings. A quick red flashing LED means low battery, while charging flashes green and the charging LED turns off when complete. MODI sleeps automatically after about 2.5 minutes without Bluetooth or 5 minutes of inactivity. If it pairs but remains unresponsive after fresh pairing, restart the host device and try again.
