Jonelle Anamelechi “My practice receives calls all the time from families who think or were told their child needs sedation for treatment,” says pediatric dentist Dr. Jonelle Anamelechi. “But pharmaceutical methods of patient behavior management always carry a risk.” In her article “Navigating New Guidelines,” Anamelechi explains what general dentists should take away from the recently updated American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry guidelines, which focus on strategies that aren’t medication-based. “Pharmacological aids may still play a vital role in pediatric dentistry,” she says, “but the decision to use them should be individualized, considering the child’s physical and emotional health.”
