John Sybru “I started drawing comics in dental school,” says Dr. John Syrbu, whose Humor With Bite panels have appeared on the Dentally Incorrect page since 2016. “It was a nice way to pass the time in class to keep myself awake and engaged.” As a faculty member at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, Syrbu sees patients one or two days a week: “It’s not technically ‘private practice,’ but I do maintain a part-time practice within the school.” He also has been working on a children’s book, which should be completed later this year.

MeinHo Schlesner After the Farran Media team signs off on each issue of Dentaltown, the files go through additional inspection at the printer before pages can be prepared for plating and printing. There, technical service representative MeinHo Schlesner helps ensure every page is set up correctly: Do all images have the proper resolution, format and color mode? Are there extra inks beyond the big four (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) in the mix? Schlesner, who has worked in the printing industry for nearly four decades, can still recall the days when the metal press plates were created via film negatives instead of today’s computer-to-plate technology.

Memoriam

Tom Delaney Farran Media recently lost one of our own: National account manager Tom Delaney passed away unexpectedly Dec. 28 in Glenview, Illinois, after a week in intensive care due to acute interstitial pneumonia (Hamman-Rich syndrome).

Tom, a longtime member of our sales team, worked remotely from his home in Northbrook, Illinois. If you attended the annual Chicago Midwinter meeting, you likely caught a glimpse of him roaming the floor, meeting new people and strengthening the many connections he’d made over the eight years he worked for Farran Media—a relatively short time when you consider his long tenure in the dental media industry.

Tom had many talents, but we all particularly appreciated his humor. Any exchange we had over email or the phone included making us laugh at some point, and if conference calls took a turn for the tense, Tom was always the one who could lighten the mood and make us remember the bigger picture. He was the epitome of camaraderie.

Family and friends celebrated his life Jan. 5 in Northbrook.
