Dental lasers are often associated with quick gum procedures, less bleeding, and shorter recovery times. However, one less-discussed area of laser dentistry is the treatment of inflammation around dental implants. This matters because implants do not decay like natural teeth, but the gum and bone around them can still become infected or inflamed.

The key issue is not simply whether a laser can be used around an implant. It is whether it is being used for the right diagnosis, with the right settings, as part of a complete treatment plan.

The difference between mucositis and peri-implantitis

Inflammation around an implant usually starts with plaque and bacteria collecting near the gumline. Early inflammation is called peri-implant mucositis. It may cause redness, swelling, bleeding when brushing, soreness, or an unpleasant taste. At this stage, there is inflammation in the soft tissue, but no ongoing bone loss.

If the problem progresses and begins damaging the bone that supports the implant, it becomes peri-implantitis. This is more serious because bone loss can affect the long-term stability of the implant. The European Federation of Periodontology’s clinical guideline explains that early diagnosis, plaque control, and regular supportive care are central to managing these conditions.

Patients should not ignore bleeding around an implant just because the implant itself does not hurt. The American Academy of Periodontology lists red, tender gums and bleeding during brushing as possible warning signs of peri-implant disease.

Where a laser may fit in

A dental professional may use a laser as an additional tool during treatment for implant-related gum inflammation. Depending on the laser type and clinical situation, it may help manage inflamed soft tissue and reduce bacterial contamination in difficult-to-access areas.

This can sound simple in marketing language, but treatment around implants is not as simple as “laser away the infection.” An implant has a titanium surface, a specific shape, and a connection to surrounding bone. The clinician must consider the type of laser, the energy used, cooling, access to the area, and the condition of the implant surface.

The laser should not replace a full assessment. The dentist or periodontist may need to check gum bleeding, pocket depth, plaque deposits, bite pressure, implant crown design, and X-rays showing the surrounding bone. If excess cement, poor access for cleaning, smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, or an ill-fitting restoration is contributing to the problem, a laser alone will not solve it.

Why the evidence needs a careful reading

Laser dentistry can be useful, but it should not be presented as a guaranteed cure for peri-implant disease. Research has produced mixed findings because studies use different laser types, treatment methods, follow-up periods, and patient groups.

For example, a systematic review on diode lasers for peri-implant mucositis found that the possible benefits of laser treatment as an adjunct were not yet fully understood. Another review found that lasers may improve bleeding outcomes in some short-term situations, but did not show clear superiority for many other clinical results when compared with conventional care.

This does not mean lasers have no place in implant treatment. It means they should be chosen based on a patient’s actual condition, rather than being sold as a one-size-fits-all solution. Newer research continues to explore their value, including this 2025 review of non-surgical laser therapy for peri-implantitis.

The practical takeaway for patients

If you have an implant that bleeds, feels sore, smells unpleasant, or has swelling around it, book an examination rather than waiting for the implant to become loose. Ask whether the problem is mucositis or peri-implantitis, whether bone loss is present, and what role—if any—a laser would play in your treatment.

The best implant care still includes thorough daily cleaning, professional maintenance visits, and early treatment of gum inflammation. A laser can be a useful part of modern dentistry, but the real goal is not to use advanced technology. The goal is to protect the gum and bone that keep the implant functioning for years.
