Resin Type, Not Cleaning Solution, Drove Accuracy of 3D-Printed Occlusal Devices

The resin used to 3D print hard occlusal devices significantly affected their fabrication accuracy, while the postprocessing cleaning solution did not, according to an in vitro study published online Oct. 4 in the Journal of Dentistry.

Researchers printed Michigan-type maxillary occlusal devices from two resins, KeySplint Hard and FreePrint Splint 2.0. They cleaned the devices with isopropyl alcohol, a methyl ether solvent, or a water-based solution, with nine devices per resin-and-solution combination. Each device was digitized with an intraoral scanner and compared against its reference design file.

Resin type significantly affected both trueness and precision (P = .045). Neither the cleaning solution (P = .273) nor the interaction between resin and solution (P = .196) had a significant effect.

KeySplint Hard devices showed lower deviations from the design file and less within-group dispersion than FreePrint Splint 2.0 devices on both measures.

For both resins, cleaning with the methyl ether solvent or the water-based solution produced no significant difference in accuracy compared with isopropyl alcohol.

The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Bern, Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the Complutense University of Madrid, The Ohio State University, and several universities in Turkey. The authors reported no competing interests.

The authors noted that the clinical implications of the measured deviations for intraoral fit, retention, and chairside adjustment still require investigation.
