A Hyperplastic Epulis Garnered More Than 33% of the Votes in Our Worst Mouth Contest, Earning Townie Dr-2th a Cash Prize

“LIKE SOME SORT OF WEIRD MEAT COMBOVER”

is how Townie Dr-2th described the hyperplastic epulis pictured in his submission for our Worst Mouth Contest, which earned more than one-third of the total votes and was declared the winner.

Late last year, we asked members to submit photos and brief descriptions of the most challenging cases that had ever presented in their practices, then selected eight of the worst in our January issue and gave readers until Feb. 12 to cast their votes. As our winner, Dr-2th earns a $300 check from Dentaltown.

The full story behind his submission: The patient came in to have a lower tooth extracted (the blood in the pictures is from the extraction) and when he asked her to remove her upper denture, he noticed she was “fiddling around with something in her mouth. Turns out she had this crazy long hyperplastic epulis in the upper right premolar area that she would tuck up into the buccal vestibule like some sort of meat combover.”

The kicker: Although the dentist recommended she have the epulis removed, she refused. For that alone, Dr-2th deserves his prize. Please congratulate your winning Townie!
