Dentaltown Magazine - Mike Gow

by Mike Gow BDS (Gla) MFDS RCPS (Gla) MSc Hyp (Lon) PGCert (Edin), Editor, DentaltownUK magazine

Dr Anoop Maini, who died suddenly this past July, left an impact on many people through his teaching, support of others, mentorship and his passion for his work and his own ongoing education.

The volume of comments on social media reflected his professional excellence, but also many of the comments—especially by those who loved and knew him best—talked of Anoop’s love of his family and the many qualities that made him a good and true friend. It was inspiring to read what was said of him.

It is difficult to find harmony between work, family and social life, but achieving some sort of balance between the various elements of our lives is ultimately what can lead to what may be considered to have been a ‘successful’ life.

Anoop was a ‘Gooner’—an Arsenal FC supporter, for those not in the know. (If you were connected with Anoop on social media, that fact would not have passed you by.) Arsenal have a motto: Victoria concordia crescit, which roughly translates as ‘Victory grows through harmony’. It seems to me that Anoop was very conscious of this motto in his own life. While his time on Earth was shorter than it should have been, I believe he appeared to have more harmony than most. And I’m sure you will agree that his was indeed a victorious life.

I’m grateful to Anoop for the support he gave to DentaltownUK over the past few years in his role as honorary editor. Indeed, I’m grateful to all the honorary editors listed, and would like to thank them for supporting us.

The main aim for starting DentaltownUK was to raise awareness of, and engagement with, the Dentaltown online community among UK dentists. In my time as editor, I believe that alongside the Defacto Dentists team, we have achieved all that we set out to do. I have thoroughly enjoyed my journey in this role, and so it is with mixed emotions that I announce that this will be our final edition of DentaltownUK.

I’d like to thank the Defacto Dentists team in the UK (especially Janet, Kadriye, James, Amanda, Leigh, Natalie and Marcus) and the Dentaltown team in U.S. (especially Howard, Lorie, Ken, Kaycee and Sam).

Dentaltown is the largest dental community in the world, with an abundance of content, including a fantastic monthly magazine, continuing education, podcasts, classified ads and discussion message boards with more than 5 million posts where 250,000-plus members discuss all manners of things related to dentistry. Be sure to register—membership is absolutely free and includes a free digital subscription to the magazine!—at dentaltown.com/register.

The Defacto Dentists team and I will be exploring new territory in our journeys to seek ‘harmony’ via various endeavours, including our new YouTube channel, Interdental.TV.

Thank you all for your support and remember: Victoria concordia crescit.
