Manual or Electric?

Dr. Steven Goldberg of sunny Boca Raton, Florida, got together with us to answer our offbeat yet awfully insightful questions for this round of Manual or Electric. Dr. Goldberg has been featured on a handful of television and radio programs and is a frequent contributing writer for dental magazines. Despite being one of the busiest guys in dentistry, he took a moment to address some of the most important topics facing the dental industry today. Well … maybe not the most important.

After a horrible disaster at sea you wash ashore on a deserted island. You managed to grab one clinical instrument before your escape. What is it and how will it help you survive on the island? Sickle scaler. Keeps the plaque off of my teeth and can cut open a coconut!

Tell us about the worst job you ever had. A Bloomingdale’s New York Fragrance Model spraying customers with Giorgio perfume! The money was good for a part-time job while in dental school, but I reeked from ladies perfume on the bus ride home each night! The looks I got were priceless!

Tell us about your hobby. Inventing and building a company to manufacture and bring a dental product to market. As dentists we are creative by nature. For me, creating a product to help improve the profession that we love keeps me energized! That’s why I developed the DentalVibe Injection Comfort System.

Have you been to a Townie Meeting? Not yet, but looking forward to the experience.

Describe your most awkward experience in dental school. The latch came loose on my fishing tackle box in the elevator, spilling my dental instruments all over the floor in front of fellow students and patients.

What is your guilty pleasure? Dove Bars, chocolate ice cream with dark chocolate coating.

What would we find in your refrigerator right now? Diet coke, don’t drink it too often, but always have it there.

Describe what you do as though you were explaining your job to a four year old. I count teeth and make sure they’re nice and clean.

What food or drink do you reach for when you feel like being bad to your teeth? S’mores.

What’s your favorite spot on Earth? New York City.

What are you waiting for to come back into style? Buitoni Instant Pizza from the 70's, heated in the toaster.

What’s the most creative way you’ve used a piece of dental equipment that wasn’t for its intended purpose? Used a scaler to cut open those annoying hermetically sealed plastic packaging containers!

What is the one thing you would literally trade an arm and a leg for? More full mouth reconstruction cases! Just kidding, actually time to sleep!

Regular toothbrush or electric toothbrush? Electric.
