Manual or Electric?

California-based Dr. Ryan Kerr shot us (pun intended) over some answers on how he keeps busy outside the office. Check out Ryan's great take on survival, the importance of 80s speed metal and his talent as a marksman.

After a horrible disaster at sea you wash ashore on a deserted island. You managed to grab one clinical instrument before your escape. What is it and how will it help you survive on the island? Dr. Murph Crane Pick. Saw Murph himself use it in Guatemala to extract impossible teeth, thwart attackers, save villages, etc. It could be used for anything from opening coconuts to signaling aircraft. It's really that good.

Tell us about the worst job you ever had. Laborer at a local cement plant. Had to clean out a roller mill building once. Made the mistake of hitting one of the main I-beams with a sledge to knock things loose. It rained pounds upon pounds of super-fine concrete powder on us.

Tell us about your hobby. I compete in tactical/precision long range rifle competitions. A couple years back I became a sponsored shooter by GA Precision and Bushnell Tactical. The meticulous nature, attention to detail, and constantly being able to learn something new has kept me glued to the sport. Well, that and being able to shoot side by side with some of the nicest people you'll meet.

Have you been to a Townie Meeting? If so, describe your experience in three words. Not yet.

Describe your most awkward experience in dental school. A mother that started breast-feeding her child while I was in the middle of doing a filling for her.

What is your guilty pleasure? An occasional cigar.

What would we find in your refrigerator right now? The normal essentials, copious amounts of diet soda, many varieties of coffee creamers, and some expired yogurt.

Describe what you do as though you were explaining your job to a four year old. I'm the one that cleans out the sugar bugs and makes your teeth nice and sparkly! (And sometimes, my job is like running a pre-school.)

What food or drink do you reach for when you feel like being bad to your teeth? Abba-Zaba

What's your favorite spot on Earth? A sandy beach in Roatan, Honduras

What are you waiting for to come back into style? 80's Speed Metal.

What's the most creative way you've used a piece of dental equipment that wasn't for its intended purpose? Using a high-speed to drill out stripped screws on a rifle. It took my staff by surprise when they walked by the operatory and I'm just sitting there holding a rifle in my lap drilling on it, loupes and all.

What is the one thing you would literally trade an arm and a leg for? To ensure that my children have a long, happy, and successful life.

Manual or electric toothbrush? Manual. Old habits die hard.
