Dentaltown Magazine sits down with VH Technologies, Ltd, the manufacturer of Diashine. Barry Bonser, Research & Development;
Anthony Bonser, Manufacturing Director; and Roland Bonser, Managing Director, tell us what we should know about Diashine, a
compound that gives a high gloss on a variety of surfaces including ceramics, composites and metals.
What is your background in dental?
Barry: What started it all for me was a soft reline material 40 years ago in England. One evening at a
pub, an owner of a dental lab leaned over and said, “dentists don’t make teeth, lab technicians do!” I was
intrigued. A few days later I went over to his lab to see for myself. While there, he asked if I would help
him sell this soft reline material. I had no background in dental whatsoever, but it turned out I was good
at selling and sold it all within a few short weeks to labs in the Hertfordshire area.
I thought the job was done, but a couple of years later I received a phone call from British liquidators
informing me the lab owner had died and they needed me to sell the remaining supplies. (My number was
in a pile of papers! This is how destiny works!) I was completely thrust into the dental world by this twist
of events but was quick to learn what was working for labs and what wasn’t. After work I would experiment
with existing products intent on improving them and have continued to do so to this day. Out of
this chance encounter at a pub, it appeared I had found my niche in life.
Tell us about Diashine.
Barry: Diashine is a diamond polishing compound that creates a quick, high-luster finish with just a
small amount; like the pomade catch phrase, “Just a dab’ll do ya.” Diashine is water soluble and doesn’t
make a mess.
Where did this idea come from?
Barry: It was an accident! It seems most of my life has been an accident. By now, I was well into my
career selling dental products and immersed with my work on product improvements. I had an idea for
a superior lubricant for die-spacers. What I didn’t know was this idea would become the binder for
Diashine. High-quality diamond polish did not exist at the time. What we did have came in a tube, was
runny, messy and contained little diamond. I knew that I could create a premier polish from my new
carrier but it had to contain 100 percent diamond. The polish would be expensive but that did not deter
me because I knew it would deliver exceptional results. I still have the first tub of Diashine in the lid of
a tin can!
The next challenge was to get techs to try this radically different compound and most of my time was
spent educating lab technicians one by one. Eventually word got out and phone calls from around the
globe started coming in. We grew solely by word of mouth, never advertising or exhibiting until 2012.
You have 15 seconds to say something about Diashine, what do you say?
Barry: We occupy that unique space in business where things have either been overlooked or ignored
and I fix that. I’ve always thought, why go 95 percent when you can attain 100 percent?
Roland: We create premium diamond finishing products for dental restoratives that look and feel like
natural teeth. Jewelers love us too!
Anthony: We are innovators who prefer diamonds for the dental products we create including Diaflex,
Diathin, Diatrim, and of course, Diashine. It has been gratifying to streamline and perfect Diashine over
the years. I liken it to making a roux since cooking is my other passion.
What is the philosophy at Diashine?
Barry:To quote Marianne Williamson, “We are all meant to shine.” So, for us, making polish is inspiring
on many levels. We know what Diashine does for restorations, but on a deeper level we believe that
each of us have the opportunity daily to finesse, polish and perfect!
How can Diashine help you polish your practice?
Roland: In 2012 I felt we were ready to make some bold moves. We decided to exhibit for the first
time at a major digital dental symposium. Our booth was flooded with dental technicians and digital dentists
from around the world. 3M ESPE approached us to create a finishing system for its Lava Ultimate
Restorative, available today worldwide at diashinepolish.com/lavaultimate.
