What's New in Continuing Education?

by Howard M. Goldstein, DMD, Director of Continuing Education
There are some great CE courses being released on Dentaltown right now. These courses are now part of the ever-expanding lineup of CE that we have online at Dentaltown.com.

First of all, Dentaltown is proud to host Dr. Carl Misch's first-ever online CE course - Rationale for Implants: Complete Edentulism. The goal of modern dentistry is to return patients to normal function, aesthetics, speech and health. The completely edentulous patient is more in need than any other patient. Yet, less than three percent of a dentists' time is spent treating this section of the population.

There are 20 million people in the U.S. who are missing all their teeth. Once the teeth are lost, not only are function, speech and health reduced, there is loss of bone. The bone loss after tooth loss might be more than 20mm in height of bone in each jaw. As a consequence, facial aesthetics are severely compromised.

Dental implants stimulate bone and prevent the gross bone loss after tooth loss. As a result, facial aesthetics are maintained since muscle attachments are not affected and atrophy of bone and muscle does not occur. Hence, dental implants not only return a patient to normal function and improved speech, dental and facial aesthetics are vastly improved as a result of dental implants in the complete edentulous patient.

This program reviews the benefits of implant treatment for edentulous patients. The dental team should be aware of the consequences of complete tooth loss and the benefits of dental implants.

Also released this month, Creating Natural-looking Implantretained Removable Prosthesis by Dr. Arnold Liebman (which ties in very nicely with Dr. Misch's CE course).

Natural-looking implant-retained prostheses are beautiful and functional when they follow smile design principles and replicate nature. A natural-looking prosthesis acts as your calling card, which provides referrals and opens a conversation for implantretained to full implant fixed cases. This CE course makes the process easy and predictable. Step-by-step procedures are shown with patient cases to create Natural Looking Prosthesis (NLP) in a simple and predictable method. The themes of the presentation are: by making a realistic and natural prosthesis it provides more referrals and that by offering removable you open a conversation of implant-retained cases, which have high acceptance.

Last month the first CE courses from Townie Meeting were put online. We recorded eight of the lectures (next year we plan on getting many more) and they are all up for viewing in our CE section. If you attended the Townie Meeting, there is no cost to view any of them which is, of course, is more incentive to go to next year's Townie Meeting! Sign up this month and receive 40 percent off tuition for the 2014 Townie Meeting. For those of you who were not at this year's Townie Meeting, we are offering each course for the low price of $18 to view. For the whole series of eight, we are giving a further price break of $126.

And don't miss the first course from Spear Education Series of Online CE on Dentaltown Connecting Teeth and Implants by Dr. Frank Spear. For most restorative dentists connecting teeth and implants can be very confusing. What are the risks and benefits to connecting? When is it safe and when is it not indicated? This course teaches the mechanics of connection and the risks associated with it. There are times when connecting teeth and implants is necessary or even preferable to other options available for the success of the restorative dentistry. Those situations are discussed and illustrated by Dr. Spear with case successes and failures shown to give a thorough understanding of what to do and what not to do.

And, of course, Dr. Howard Farran's One-Day Dental MBA is available of Dentaltown. Dr. Farran shares his proven techniques to increase your productivity, boost your bottom line and build your business. Don't miss his live and unfiltered insights on dentistry and business along with an insider's view of his dental practice.

Enjoy learning from the comfort of your home!
