DentalTown’s online survey on implants resulted in some very interesting statistics. Over 74% of the 837 dentists who responded said they don’t place them for various reasons. What’s really fascinating though are the results from the question, “If you lost tooth number #19 and your adjacent teeth #18 & #20 were virgin, how would you replace #19?” Keeping in mind the majority of GPs don’t place implants, 84% of them would choose implants as their restorative choice. Clearly, the ‘value’ of implants as a treatment option appears to be extremely positive.

Many of you who attended the DentalTown Gathering in Vegas this year, had the opportunity to meet Jerome Smith, DDS, a general dentist from Lafayette, LA. If you want to hear a very funny story, ask Howard about the first time he meet Jerome down in Louisiana. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Jerome for many years, mostly in conjunction with his involvement with the charitable Mexico Dental Project. Details and discussion on upcoming opportunities to become involved with this event can be found in the Missionary Forum moderated by Jerome online at DentalTown.com.

This month Jerome shares his very thought-provoking viewpoint on implantology and the general dentist. He explains how implantology has become the focus of his practice and the incredible rewards both he and his patients share as a result of his decision.

Coast Dental, founded in 1992, is our corporate profile focus this month. The company’s partnership program allows doctors to maintain complete control over the clinical process and day-to-day operations of their practice, while benefiting from the buying power, information systems technology, marketing support and the numerous other benefits available through a group practice.

Jerome was the first person to grace the cover on the inaugural issue of Howard’s newsletter, The Farran Report in March, 1994.
