Taking a perfect impression with the Quad-Tray

You’ve determined that a crown is the best treatment option for your patient, and you’re about to take the final impression(s).

• How many impressions will you take before you accurately capture the entire preparation site in wash material?

While no one likes to admit it, many dentists retake and retake and retake before they finally achieve a clinically acceptable capture of the margins and preparation detail. Sometimes they spend more time than they can afford adjusting occlusion. And often labs take the blame for prosthetic misfits, even when the problem was actually in the accuracy of the impression.

Although it is sometimes difficult to detect, plastic dual-arch impression trays flex and rebound during the take. Conversely, the dead soft aluminum QUAD-TRAY simply will not flex as the patient closes during insertion, and it won’t rebound upon removal. With the QUAD-TRAY, distortion is eliminated. A perfectly accurate impression, however, involves more than just the tray. The impression material you choose is vitally important as well.

Pairing the QUAD-TRAY with AFFINITY InFlex Maximum Support Tray Material is like putting a hand in a glove. InFlex is a 3rd generation impression material developed by CLINICIAN’S CHOICE specifically for the dual-arch technique. InFlex combines the high durometer of a bite registration material to resist distortion with the support, work, and set times of a tray material. When used with AFFINITY Light Body HF (high flow), InFlex will not overdisplace the Light Body HF, but rather it and the QUAD-TRAY mobilize the lighter viscosity into the sulcus to accurately capture the marginal detail.

Clinical Technique
Try-in tray, adjust size if necessary. Prepare the tooth, achieve hemostasis and tissue retraction.
Inject AFFINITY Light Body HF* (High Flow) around preparations, keeping tip submerged throughout placement.
Use ample amount of Light Body HF. In order to ensure ideal coverage, be sure to allow the material to lead the way while syringing.
Simultaneous to Light Body HF placement, have your assistant syringe AFFINITY InFlex* onto the tray. Incorporate the tray, and build-up excess InFlex at preparation areas.
Insert tray, reminding patient to fully close without excess clenching pressure.
Always remove opposing arch first to avoid tearing the impression material. Gently rock the impression on the prep side until the tray releases. Inspect the impression, note that the prep is captured completely in the wash material – for a perfect impression.
