Flumazenil injection, the reversal agent for benzodiazepine overdosage, is in shortage. Products from Baxter, Fresenius Kabi, and Hikma are affected, according to a Sept. 21 drug shortage bulletin from the University of Utah Drug Information Service and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

As of the bulletin date, supply stood as follows:

Manufacturer5 mL vials10 mL vials
BaxterBack order, no estimated returnBack order, no estimated return
Fresenius KabiBack order, estimated mid-OctoberBack order, estimated early October
HikmaStill availableBack order, estimated mid- to late October

Baxter attributed the shortage to manufacturing delays at a third-party supplier. Fresenius Kabi and Hikma did not give a reason.

Flumazenil is used to reverse benzodiazepine overdosage during oral sedation. According to ADA News, some state laws may require it to be on hand when those procedures are performed.

All resupply dates are manufacturer estimates reported as of Sept. 21 and are subject to change.
