Ransomware Strikes Indiana Dental Practice’s Server, Hitting Patient Records and Imaging Software

This ransomware didn’t stop at an email inbox. At Bright Smile Dental Care in Fishers, Indiana, it landed on the practice’s server, affecting its practice management and patient record software along with its dental imaging software.

The practice discovered the ransomware Aug. 3 and immediately brought in cybersecurity consultants, according to a notice posted on its website. Local outlet LarryInFishers reported the incident Sept. 28.

According to the notice, the information potentially involved included patient names, dates of birth, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, insurance information, information about dependents, and health information, plus Social Security numbers in some cases. Patients’ financial information was not affected.

There’s a reason the practice considers the risk low. Its investigation found that all the data on the server was encrypted, and there’s no indication the attacker had the keys needed to view it, according to the notice. Bright Smile says it has no evidence any patient information was misused and is providing notice out of caution.

The practice is mailing letters to potentially affected patients, notifying the national consumer reporting agencies, and offering free TransUnion credit monitoring to patients whose Social Security numbers may have been involved. It also says it is adding safeguards and updating its privacy and security policies.

The notice does not say how many patients were affected, who was behind the attack, or whether any ransom was paid.
