ADA Presses UnitedHealthcare to Accept CAQH Data for Dentist Credentialing

The ADA is pressing UnitedHealthcare to accept dentists’ existing credentialing information through the CAQH Provider Data Portal rather than requiring clinicians to complete additional payer-specific paperwork, the association said Aug. 12.

The ADA argues that requiring dentists to re-enter information already held in CAQH adds administrative work without a corresponding benefit. It is asking the insurer to accept a dentist’s CAQH provider ID as the credentialing submission.

According to the association, UnitedHealthcare’s system is capable of importing CAQH information, but dentists may still be required to complete additional steps beyond that import. The ADA said that as of Aug. 12 the insurer had not provided it with a rationale for the additional requirements.

CAQH operates a centralized provider data portal widely used across health insurance credentialing, allowing clinicians to maintain a single credentialing profile that participating payers can draw from rather than completing separate applications for each plan.

Credentialing represents a recurring administrative cost for practices, and duplicate submissions consume staff time that scales with the number of payers a practice participates in and the number of clinicians it employs.

The association framed the request as part of its broader work on insurance administrative burden. The ADA published a credentialing toolkit in July aimed at reducing enrollment delays for dentists.

The ADA said it is continuing to seek an explanation from UnitedHealthcare and a change to the requirement.
