At the 82nd ADEA Annual Session held March 5-9, 2005, in Baltimore, Dr. Frank Catalanotto, 2004-05 President, presented a number of fellowships and awards to outstanding faculty members who teach in dental and allied dental programs.
“Dental and allied dental education is blessed with many dedicated, talented faculty members,” said President Catalanotto. “ADEA is delighted each year to grant fellowships and awards to a chosen few who are especially extending themselves and their expertise to make extraordinary contributions to the field. We are grateful to the corporate sponsors of these honors for making these forms of recognition and support possible.”
The ADEA/Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals Allied Dental Educators Fellowship provides the opportunity for an allied dental educator to focus on a broad range of issues affecting allied dental education. This year’s fellow is Prof. Josette L. Beach, Portland Community College.
The ADEA Gies Education Fellowship is a means for dental educators to contribute to critical issues facing dental education, working in residence with the ADEA Center for Educational Policy and Research. The 2005 ADEA/William J. Gies Fellow is Dr. Jed Hand, University of Iowa.
The ADEA Sunstar Butler/Harry W. Bruce, Jr. Legislative Fellowship is a public policy fellowship designed to familiarize faculty with the federal legislative process as it relates to dental education. Working with the ADEA Center for Public Policy and Advocacy, the fellow may draft policy, bills, position papers, testimony, and report language; help educate members of Congress about critical issues; and work with various coalitions. This year’s fellow is Dr. Carol Anderson, University of Maryland.
The ADEA/Pfizer Inc Enid A. Neidle Scholar in Residence completes a residence period at the ADEA Center for Equity and Diversity, working on issues affecting women faculty, such as promotion, advancement and tenure policies, entry and re-entry into the workforce, child and elder care issues, women’s health, work patterns, advanced education and research opportunities, and other gender-related issues. The 2005-06 scholar is Dr. Mildred McClain, University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
The ADEA/GlaxoSmithKline Sensodyne Excellence in Teaching Award was conceived by ADEA’s Council of Faculties to recognize dental educators who demonstrate exemplary standards and promote excellence in dental education through scholarship and innovation. The 2005 award went to Dr. Stephen Bayne, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Established by ADEA’s Council of Students, the ADEA Council of Students/Vital Source Technologies, Inc. Junior Faculty Award recognizes outstanding junior faculty who demonstrate excellence in teaching, research, and service and a commitment to dental education. This award acknowledges the accomplishments of junior faculty and promotes awareness of the needs of this distinct group of educators. This year’s award went to Dr. Andres Pinto, University of Pennsylvania.
To encourage junior faculty to publish, the Journal of Dental Education gives annual awards for the best articles in which a junior faculty member or student is the sole or lead author. The awards to faculty members for the calendar year 2004 were as follows: Dr. Tamara Gravely, University of Tennessee, for “Enrichment and Recruitment Programs at Dental Schools: Impact on Enrollment of Underrepresented Minority Students”; Dr. Roma Jasinevicius, Case School of Dental Medicine, for “An Evaluation of Two Dental Simulation Systems: Virtual Reality versus Contemporary Non-Computer-Assisted”; and Ms. Sonya Smithers, St. Mary’s University, for “What Predicts Performance in Canadian Dental Schools?”
An award established by ADEA’s Council of Sections recognizes a section that has not only fulfilled its basic responsibilities but has conducted activities that provide significant benefit to the Council, the Association, and dental education. The 2004 Best Performance by a Section awards went to: the Section on Dental Hygiene Education, represented by the section’s Councilor, Prof. Mary Ann Haisch, Oregon Health & Science Univer; and the Section on Operative Dentistry, represented by the section’s Councilor, Dr. Frank Pink, University of Detroit Mercy.
These awards, totaling more than $100,000, are generously supported through grants from the ADEA/William J. Gies Foundation, Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals, GlaxoSmithKline, Oral-B Laboratories, Pfizer/Listerine, Sunstar Butler, and Vital Source Technologies.
