Your Practice’s Horoscope

March wandered in like a mangy cat and staggered out like a half-crushed sewer roach. The tepid cookpot of the practice awaits a new flame to rekindle its flavor and bring alive the life-broth that once sustained you … but better to boil it for a few minutes first, just to make sure it’s safe.

Tolstoy wrote that spring is the time of plans and projects. In a season when pollen, not patients, will be bountiful and plentiful, stock up on Kleenex and daze yourself and the team with daily cetirizine pill parties. (Employees who are too drowsy to update résumés leave less often.)

In this transitional phase, it’s essential to assess the state of your practice with a discerning eye. Take stock of outdated equipment, worn-out furnishings and inefficient workflows that may be hindering your ability to provide optimal care. Now that you’re done looking at yourself in the mirror, be sure to take a glimpse around your office, too.

Approach the concept of growth like a distrustful raccoon reaching for an abandoned campground hot dog. Sure, it looks tasty, but so did the subprime mortgage market in the mid-2000s and look how that turned out! In all things, avoid the possibility of meltdowns, widespread devastation and, most importantly, nitrates.

Relatedly, Uranus is unpredictable and shuttling, a cosmic cycle that happens once every 80-some years. Dial back your expectations about having or needing to attend social obligations. Lower ... even lower ... there!

Emotions will run raw as you temper the sunnier days with lingering wants. You long to be like a returning hummingbird, but are probably more like a blindfolded squirrel stuck in a nut-free facility. And, lastly, remind yourself that you don’t believe in astrology—palmistry is more practical. Study the lines of your hand before smacking yourself in the forehead.
