Scottish Dental Study Club

Last month marked the first anniversary of the Scottish Dental Study Club, A record 65 delegates travelling from as far as Elgin and Dumfries to attend the event, with Dr Grant McAree from Exeter presenting ‘Advertising and Marketing Tips for Dentists’.

The study club was set up by Dr Tariq Bashir and his wife, Dr Saimah Ahmed, just over a year ago because they believed there was a need for high-quality postgraduate dental courses in Scotland. They have attended many courses around the UK and internationally and believed that not all of their colleagues could do the same, so they decided to bring top lecturers and clinicians to Scotland. Their aim was to raise the bar in Scottish dentistry, and also to improve networking within the profession at these difficult times of overregulation and demotivation.

Initially, this started with an evening study with a top medical negligence QC discussing the topic of consent. The evening study club is held bimonthly, covering various contemporary topics with speakers who are leaders in their field, and has grown to also hosting hands-on day courses.

The purpose of the study club is not only to serve the dental community but also to benefit the wider community and humanity. From its inception in February 2018, the club has been able to support multiple charities in the UK and abroad by donating 10% of all profits from each evening event and day course. This is due to the support from its delegates, trade sponsors and speakers. For Bashir and Ahmed, this has been one of the most rewarding aspects of running the study club, and they hope to expand the charitable giving to many other projects over the years.

Bashir and Ahmed will be bringing more hands-on courses to Scotland over the coming year, including world renowned speakers, with plans to make dental courses more inspiring and enjoyable. This will help put Scotland on the global dental map!
