Communication is key for a successful career in dentistry. Professionals need to be able to communicate with each other for a smooth daily workflow and efficient collaboration, but perhaps more importantly, you also need to communicate effectively with your patients.

There are many aspects to consider – what information do you provide? How do you present it? What type of language do you use? How do you make sure your patient has properly understood the proposed treatment and the difference a good result could have on their quality of life?

Ashley Latter has more than 23 years of experience in discussing the importance of communication skills with dentists, having worked with over 14,500 professionals in 13 countries. It’s all part of his “Ethical Sales & Communication” training courses, which he will be providing a taster of at The Dentistry Show 2017.

“85-90% of dentists’ success in a consultation will often come down to how good their communication skills are – only 10-15% is applicable to technical skills and product knowledge,” Ashley comments. “Most dentists spend 100% of their time developing their product knowledge, but very little time improving their communication skills. That’s why this is a must attend session at The Dentistry Show.”

Ashley will be speaking in the Next Generation Conference, giving a session entitled “The secrets to perfect communication in the dental practice”. Supported by Dental Circle, this is a brand new feature for 2017 and will focus on delivering fresh ideas and information on topics young dentists would not have covered in detail while at dental school.

During his session, Ashley will consider the key communication mistakes most commonly made by dentists and how these could be costing thousands of pounds worth of opportunities every week. He continues:

“Good communication skills can make a huge difference to every practitioner. By passing on the right information in the right way, dentists can help increase treatment acceptance, ensure their patients appreciate the value of what they do and be more comfortable about openly discussing fees.

“I hope delegates will leave my lecture with a better understanding of the importance of building strong relationships with their patients. They should also pick up tips on how to communicate in a way that patients understand, increasing opportunities to perform more of the dentistry that they love to do and their patients want.

“I promise delegates will come away with several ideas that could completely change the way they communicate with their patients. Just one idea or concept could change the way they communicate forever and it could save 10 years of hurt and lost opportunities.”

Other speakers in the Next Generation Conference include Leo Briggs, Richard Kahan, Nilesh Parmar, Dev Patel, Minesh Patel, Tif Qureshi and Attiq Rahman, with topics exploring everything from clinical photography to treatment for tooth wear, implantology, avoiding litigation and 21st century endodontics.

Further afield, the BACD Aesthetic Dentist Theatre, GDP Theatre, Dental Business Theatre (delivered by Practice Plan), PerioLounge, EndoLounge, Core CPD Theatre and Compliance Clinic will offer a huge choice of education and CPD for dentists with all interests and experience levels. Headline speakers will include Elaine Halley, Jameel Gardee, Christopher McConnell, Andrea Shepperson, Professor Nigel Pitts, Professor James Prichard, Sheila Scott, Les Jones, Anil Shrestha, David Gillam, Jaswinder Gill, Leslie Stevens and many more!

The trade floor will also provide an opportunity to seek information, demonstrations and advice on thousands of dental products, technologies and materials. More than 400 exhibitors are expected to attend once again, each bringing with them their very latest innovations and offering some fantastic deals. The trade floor will also be the ideal place to network with colleagues in all areas of dentistry, catching up with friends while meeting new people to collaborate with in the future.

About the event Ashley adds:

“I really like The Dentistry Show. It draws a good crowd and I normally find there is a lot of forward-thinkers there.”
