GDP orthodontics has grown enormously in recently years, but whether provided by GDPs or orthodontists, it coincides nicely with the recent emphasis on minimally invasive dentistry.

Orthodontic appliances facilitate the improvement of both the aesthetics and functionality of the teeth, without necessitating the excessive preparation of natural tissue required for alternative treatment such as veneers. In some cases, orthodontics can precede further cosmetic procedures in order to reduce or eliminate the amount of preparation required.

Patients are usually most concerned with the appearance of their teeth and often seek quick fixes that will help them achieve their desired smile. Many GDP orthodontic solutions are therefore designed to focus on the anterior segment of the dentition, providing a shorter treatment time than comprehensive orthodontics in appropriate cases.

Anterior alignment can also be accompanied by tooth whitening and composite edge bonding to maximise aesthetics. This enables patients to get the smile they’ve always wanted while preserving the maximum amount of natural tissue.

James Russell will be discussing the connection between orthodontics and aesthetics at The Dentistry Show in May. James is a general dentist based in Shropshire and an accredited member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD).

His lecture in the BACD Aesthetic Dentist Theatre will be entitled “Aesthetic dentistry and orthodontics – an essential link”. James comments:

“The attitude towards orthodontics has changed in recent years. There are now many patients willing to be treated with orthodontic options, who wouldn’t have even been considered for this treatment modality in the past.

“GDP orthodontics has also become much more popular, as it can deliver fantastic results in a time and cost effective way, maximising patient satisfaction. This is only possible, however, if GDPs appreciate the need for appropriate case selection, accurate diagnosis and thorough treatment planning.

“These are the aspects I will highlight in my lecture, as they make treatment potentially less invasive as well as more predictable and aesthetic. A clear plan with a reliable suggested outcome also improves patient consent and offers an extra level of protection for the practitioner.

“I will look at the entire workflow step-by-step from initial consultation and assessment to diagnosis and treatment planning, offering practical hints and tips along the way. I will also look at the different orthodontic options available to GDPs.”

Aside from James, The Dentistry Show will host an array of UK and international speakers, including Elaine Halley, Dipesh Palmar, Christopher McConnell, Jameel Gardee, Andrea Shepperson, Richard Kahan, Minesh Patel, Nigel Pitts, James Pritchard and many more! A huge range of relevant topics will be covered, catering to all dentists regardless of experience, interests or speciality. Additional theatres will provide further insight into the different disciplines, with the Short-term Ortho Lounge, PerioLounge, EndoLounge, ADI Implant Theatre and Facial Aesthetics Theatre exploring the latest in each field.

What’s more, this will be the perfect event to bring your whole team, as two-day lecture programmes will be dedicated to specific members of the team with the Dental Nurses Forum and Hygienist & Therapist Symposium. For practice managers and owners, the Dental Business Theatre – brought to you by Practice Plan – will deliver an action-packed programme of engaging presentations designed to help you build a successful and profitable practice. Key speakers here include les Jones, Chris Barrow, Ashley Latter, Sheila Scott and The Singing Dentist.

There will be even more to gain from the trade floor, where more than 400 dental manufacturers and suppliers are expected to show the latest products, materials and technologies in the UK profession, with on-stand learning, live demonstrations and fantastic deals to suit everyone.

James adds:

“The Dentistry Show has grown to be much more than a trade show. It’s a pleasure to be able to present here and I’m looking forward to listening to and learning from the other speakers as well visiting the stands and meeting up with friends!”
